OpenSource and Linux

1st July 2010 | bluray

Opensource is at the heart of linux, the BSD's, OpenOffice, Apache web server, Blender 3D and a host of other increasingly high profile projects. Wherever possible I try to utilise as much Opensource material as possible. Opensource is a way to sell services, not products. If one thinks people are going to pay or donate for an opensource product, then he's going to be pissed off.

Opensource is free to distribute. And ubuntu even makes cds and gives them away for free. Opensource is not about stealing code. And remember, GPL does not give you the ability to steal code without giving credit back, if you are not doing so, you are breaching GPL. Al though there are still no open source alternative available for software such as best bluray ripper or any other blu-ray ripper in general. OpenSource is free software that's developed by a community of volunteers. Inc.com in an article entitled, " Open Source: It's Not Just for Geeks Anymore!".writes The big issue for an enterprise to consider when thinking about going with an open source program is how it will be supported.

OpenSource is the Way of the Future

17th June 2010 | bluray

If youve been following me and my blog you may know that software is all I write about and im especially passionat about the shareware and opensource debate. And this is exactly what this blog is all about. Now thsi post is mostly going to be about opensource and will also link to my other blog discussing the same topics such as best blu ray ripper, which is mainly shareware and ill talk about that in the next paragraphs.

OpenSource is not only about the public access to the code, the key point is the permission you give to the other developers. Of course the code must be public, but this is not enough. OpenSource is now enough of a threat to companies like Microsoft that Bill Gates felt obliged to try pushing some old Cold War patriotic buttons by lashing out at the "hippies and communists" the movement relies on. Microsoft has encouraged companies like SCO and Blu Ray Ripper in their high-drama attempts to spread fear, uncertainty and doubt (FUD) over the commercial use of OpenSource code. OpenSource is not just for programmers and the ubber tech savvy. It can, and I believe it should, be the way we create, exchange and use information.

Shareware :/

yeah thats what I thought.. the title must be enough to make you cringe.. Im all in for opensoource and so will my bluray ripper software.

Shareware is often a blanket term to include any program that isn't freeware , or requires or suggests no activity on the part of the user. Some methods generate revenue for the programmer through methods other than voluntary payment. Shareware is a "Try-Before-You-Buy" concept of marketing software. You are allowed to give the shareware (time-limited trial version) to your friends to try. Shareware is often offered without support, updates, or help menus, which only become available with the purchase of a license. The words "free trial", "trial version" are indicative of shareware.

Freeware may also have a trial version but that is only till you register with the wensite. The registration is free and after that the software becomes a full version. An example is the ever popular avast AV

Blu Ray Software - Do we Really Need it

11th May 2010 | bluray

Ok so now that I have figured out where it actually goes, ill now post an actual post. [But seriously, how do I add an article to my home page???]

So first off what is software. Software is usually designed and created (coded/written/programmed) in integrated development environments (IDE) like Eclipse , Emacs and Microsoft Visual Studio that can simplify the process and compile the program. As noted in different section, software is usually created on top of existing software and the application programming interface (API) that the underlying software provides like GTK+ , JavaBeans or Swing . Software is short for computer software. It means the applications and operating systems used with computers. Software is an essential tool for most businesses, for example the blu-ray ripper found on this page but purchasing it can be confusing. This is partly because you are not buying the program itself, and you do not actually own it.

Users, on the other hand, use the program without necessarily understanding its internals. They may also find bugs and report them to the programmers. User functions to add listings / information to categories, upload images to listings, edit, add or delete listings. Make multiple entries, etc.

So now that thats settled teh main problem now is to decide wheter to sell my software or to give it away as free.. but judging by the market now, selling it is not an option as the market is already saturated with similar software. Freeware may be the best option... but at what license?
